Jay Sanders Appointed

FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Homer Bryson announced the appointment of Jay Sanders to Assistant Commissioner of Inmate Services effective November 15, 2016. Sanders will be responsible for overseeing the Agency’s Academic Education, Vocational Training, Chaplaincy and Risk Reduction Services, Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Centers (RSATs), and Transitional Services and reentry.

“The agency looks forward to Jay’s return, and we are confident in his ability to provide the offender population with the tools needed for a successful transition back into society,” said Commissioner Homer Bryson. “He possesses a wealth of knowledge in reentry, and will be a great asset as GDC continues to pursue the mission of reducing recidivism through effective programming and education.”

Sanders began his career with GDC in 1992 as a Probation Officer. His past roles include Regional Training Coordinator, Hearing Officer, Public Safety Training Instructor and Special Assistant to the Director of Probation Operations. In his current role as Deputy Director – Reentry Services Unit with the Department of Community Supervision, Sanders helps lead the state’s initiative on prisoner reentry as well as manage several large grants that have recently been awarded to assist in this effort.      

Sanders was appointed by Governor Deal to the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council as a citizen member in 2013, and last year, was appointed to the Juvenile Justice Statewide Advisory Group.

Jay is a POST Certified Master Instructor with certifications in Firearms and Defensive Tactics. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Pensacola Christian College, and a Master’s degree in Social Administration from Georgia Southwestern State University.
