New Deputy Warden of Security Named at Wilcox State Prison

Lawrence Whittington Promoted
FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Homer Bryson announced the promotion of Lawrence Whittington to Deputy Warden of Security at Wilcox State Prison (SP) effective November 16, 2016. As Deputy Warden, Whittington will be responsible for supervising and managing 187 security staff and over 1,800 medium security male offenders.
“Lawrence possesses 21 years of experience with security protocol and practices,” said Commissioner Homer Bryson. “This expertise will serve him well as Deputy Warden at Wilcox.”
Whittington started his career with the Department in 1995 as a Correctional Officer at Wilcox SP. In 1997, he was promoted to Sergeant at Wilcox SP, and in 2003, he was promoted to Lieutenant at Dooly SP. Whittington was promoted to Unit Manager at Macon SP in 2003, and later that year, he was promoted to Assistant Superintendent at Western Pre-Release Center. In 2006, he was reassigned to Security Chief at Central Probation Detention Center. In 2010, Whittington transferred to Bleckley Probation Detention Center as a Correctional Officer, and in 2011, he was promoted to Lieutenant at Wilcox SP. In 2013, Whittington was promoted to Unit Manager at Pulaski SP, where he currently serves.
Whittington received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Thomas University and an Associate degree in Criminal Justice from Middle Georgia College. He has completed the following departmental training: Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT), Basic Management Training (BMT), Advanced Management Training (AMT), Sergeant’s Academy, Professional Management Program (PMP), and Corrections Leadership Institute (CLI).
The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
