Wesley O’Neal Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier announced the promotion of Wesley O’Neal to Deputy Warden of Security at Telfair State Prison (SP) effective September 1, 2017. O’Neal will be responsible for supervising and managing all security staff and the overall management and operation of the facility housing over 1,350 close security male offenders.

“Wesley has served the agency faithfully for over 22 years,” said Commissioner Dozier. “We look forward to the knowledge and experience he will bring with him to Telfair State Prison.”

O’Neal began his career with the department in 1995 as a Correctional Officer at Dodge SP. In 2003, he was promoted to Sergeant at Dodge SP, and in 2007, he was promoted to Lieutenant at Johnson SP. O’Neal served on the Tactical Squad at Dodge SP and served as the Tactical Squad Commander at Johnson SP. In 2014, he was promoted to Chief of Security at Dodge SP. O’Neal was promoted to Unit Manager at Johnson SP in 2015, where he currently serves.

O’Neal has completed the following departmental training: Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT), Basic Management Training (BMT), Advanced Management Training (AMT), the Professional Management Program (PMP), Sergeant’s Academy, and the Corrections Leadership Institute. He has also completed Taser, Special Operations Basic, and Chemical Munitions training.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
