Matthew Newkirk Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. – The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Tyrone Oliver announced the promotion of Matthew Newkirk, Accounting Technician III at Macon State Prison (SP), to Deputy Warden of Administration at Johnson SP, effective August 16, 2026. As Deputy Warden, Newkirk will be responsible for the management of the facility's business office, property/supply operations, and food service departments. 

"Matthew has been an asset to the GDC team while working his way up through the ranks and immersing himself in the business operations at the facility," said Commissioner Oliver. "We are confident that he will continue to lead with integrity as he takes on his new role as Deputy Warden at Johnson SP."

Newkirk began his career with the department in 2023 as an administrative employee at Macon SP and later that year was promoted to Accounting Technician I. In 2024, he was promoted to Accounting Technician II, and in 2025, to Accounting Technician III, where he currently serves

Newkirk's departmental training consists of Introduction to State Purchasing, Fundamentals of State Purchasing, eProcurement for Requesters, eProcurement Purchase Orders for Buyers, eProcurement for Approvers, and POST Instructor Training.
