Tarmarshe Smith Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Tyrone Oliver announced the promotion of Tarmarshe Smith, Assistant Director for the Southeast Region, to Southeast Regional Director, effective October 1, 2025, following the retirement of his predecessor, Annettia Toby.  As Southeast Regional Director, Smith will oversee the management of 16 state prison facilities throughout the Southeast Georgia region.

"Tarmarshe's extensive knowledge and experience in the field of corrections have proven to be extremely valuable to the agency," said Commissioner Tyrone Oliver. "We are confident in his ability to lead the southeast region with integrity and unwavering commitment as he takes on his new role."

Smith began his career with the GDC in 2002 as a Correctional Officer at Georgia SP. During his tenure there, he was promoted to various positions, including Canine Handler, Sergeant, C.E.R.T. Sergeant, Security Threat Group Investigator, Lieutenant, Tactical Squad Assistant, Tactical Squad Commander, Captain, Major, and Unit Manager. In 2016, Smith was promoted to Deputy Warden of Security at Smith SP, and in 2018, he was promoted to Warden at Calhoun SP.  In 2020, Smith was reassigned to Macon SP, and in 2023, he was promoted to Assistant Director for the Southeast Region, where he currently serves.

Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Safety Leadership from Mercer University and a Master of Public Safety Administration. His departmental training consists of Basic Correctional Officer Training, Basic Management Training, Advanced Management Training, Professional Management Program, Sergeants Academy, Warden's Pre-Command and Security Threat Group Investigator Training. Smith has also attended the National Institute of Corrections Training and Adjunct Auditor Training.
