Dooly State Prisons hosts ceremony to celebrate accomplishment

FORSYTH, Ga. – On June 31, Dooly State Prison (SP) hosted a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) graduation ceremony to recognize the 52 men who received their GED at Dooly SP in FY17.

“Through hard work and determination, Dooly State Prison has almost tripled the number of GEDs earned over the past three fiscal years, with 17 in FY15 and 29 in FY16,” said Commissioner Dozier. “We are grateful for our dedicated staff, without whom this achievement would not have been possible.”

At the event, the Valedictorian recognized one security and one non-security employee with the agency’s Golden Apple Award, for their exemplary efforts in helping the offenders earn their diploma. The security recipient was Officer Loretta Brown and the non-security recipient was full-time GED teacher Faith Collins.

The GED program provides educational services catered to offenders who did not complete their high school education prior to incarceration. Students must pass tests in four basic subject areas to acquire their GED: Mathematics, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
