New Superintendent at Emanuel Probation Detention Center Named

Jeffrey Coleman Appointed

FORSYTH, Ga. — Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Homer Bryson announced the appointment of Jeffrey Coleman to Superintendent of Emanuel Probation Detention Center effective July 1, 2015. As Superintendent, Coleman will be responsible for the day to day operations of the facility and overseeing 72 staff members and 369 medium security male offenders.

“Jeff has served over 21 years with the Department in various roles throughout the state,” said Commissioner Homer Bryson. “I know he brings a wealth of knowledge with him and am excited to see him perform in his new role as Superintendent at Emanuel Probation Detention Center.”

Coleman began his career with the Department in 1994 as a Correctional Officer at Johnson State Prison. Coleman has served in many capacities at Johnson SP to include: promotion to Sergeant in 1996 and promotion to Lieutenant in 1997. In 1999, Coleman was promoted to Administrative Lieutenant at Wrightsville Youth Detention Center. In October 1999, Coleman was promoted to Senior Investigator and Apprehensions at Central Office in Atlanta. In 2003, Coleman returned to Johnson SP to serve as a Correctional Officer, and in December of that year he was promoted to Sergeant of Rogers State Prison. In 2004, Coleman was reassigned to Sergeant at Treutlen Probation Detention Center. In 2004, Coleman was promoted to the Acting Chief of Security at Central Probation Detention Center, and in 2005 he was reassigned to Lieutenant at Dodge State Prison. In 2006, Coleman was promoted to Captain at Smith State Prison and in 2010, he was promoted to Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment at Montgomery State Prison, where he most recently served.

Coleman earned his Law Enforcement degree from Thomas University. During his career with the Department, he has completed the following training courses; Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT); Basic Management Training (BMT), Advanced Management Training (AMT), Juvenile Basic Corrections Academy, Professional Management Program (PMP), Correctional Leadership Institute (CLI), and Wardens Pre-Command.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 55,000 state prisoners.  It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,000 employees.
