Introduction of New Award for GED Completion Results

Forsyth ——The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) is pleased to introduce the Commissioner’s Education Cup, designed to award the leading facility or center with the highest percentage of GED completion rates. In addition to the Cup, GDC will award facilities and centers that meet or exceed state goals as well as award students with the highest GED scores across the state.

“The implementation of the Commissioner’s Education Cup will help award those facilities and centers that are working hard to increase our offender GED completion rates,” said Dr. Buster Evans, Assistant Commissioner of Education.

GDC Education officials began tracking GED completion results in July 2014, with the launch of the GED Fast Track program at Johnson, Lee Arrendale, and Washington State Prisons, and will continue to track until June 30, 2015. All facilities including state prisons, transitional centers, day reporting centers, residential substance abuse treatment facilities and probation detention centers, will be considered for the Commissioner’s Education Cup. The official presentation of awards will occur at the Annual GDC Teacher Conference in July 2015.

“Increasing our GED completion numbers will contribute to the successful reentry of our inmate population back into society,” said Commissioner Brian Owens.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 55,000 state prisoners and over 160,000 probationers.  It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
