New Deputy Warden of Security Named at Whitworth Women's Facility

Forsyth — Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Brian Owens announced the appointment of Mark Martin to Deputy Warden of Security at Whitworth Women’s Facility effective July 16, 2014. The facility is located in Hartwell, Georgia. Formally Deputy Warden of Care & Treatment at Whitworth Women’s Facility, Martin will now be responsible for supervising and managing 97 security staff and the overall management and operation of the facility.
“Mark is a valuable asset to the Department and is committed to helping us carry out our mission,” said Commissioner Brian Owens. “We look forward to the leadership and experience he will continue to bring to the inmates and staff at Whitworth Women’s Facility,” added Owens.
Martin began his career with the Department in 1989 as a Probation Officer at Albany Probation Office. In 1990, Martin transferred to Hart Probation Detention Center to serve as a Probation Officer. In 1995, Martin was promoted to Senior Counselor at Whitworth Detention Center. In 1997, he was promoted to Assistant Superintendent at Whitworth Detention Center. In 2003, Martin was promoted to Deputy Warden of Security/Care & Treatment at Whitworth Parole Revocation Center. In 2013, Martin transferred to Whitworth Women’s Facility as the Deputy Warden of Care & Treatment, where he most recently served.
Martin earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Criminal Justice from the University of West Georgia. During his career with the Department he has completed the following training; Basic Probation Officer Training, Basic Management Training, Basic Correctional Officer Training, and the Professional Management Program.
The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 55,000 state prisoners and more than 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
