James Hinton Reassigned

FORSYTH, Ga.— Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Brian Owens announced the reassignment of James Hinton to Deputy Warden of Security at Dooly State Prison effective November 1, 2014. Formally Deputy Warden of Security at Central State Prison, Hinton will now be responsible for supervising and managing 193 security staff and the overall management and operation of the facility located in Unadilla, Ga.

“James has been faithfully serving the Department for over 21 years now,” said Commissioner Brian Owens. “We look forward to his continued leadership in carrying out the Department’s mission in his new facility.”    

Hinton began his career with the Department in 1993 as Correctional Officer at Macon State Prison. During his 11 year tenure at Macon State Prison he has served in the following positions; promoted to Sergeant in 1998, promoted to Lieutenant in 2001, and in 2009 he was promoted to Special Operations Coordinator. In June of 2009, he was promoted to Deputy Warden of Security at Macon State Prison. In July 2014, Hinton was promoted to Deputy Warden of Security at Central State Prison, where he most recently served.

James has an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Thomas University and is in the process of obtaining his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Thomas University, with an anticipated completion date in Spring of 2015. During his career with the Department, Hinton has completed the following departmental training: Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT); Basic Probation Officer Training (BPOT); Professional Management Program (PMP); Corrections Leadership Institute (CLI); and Pre-Command for Wardens and Chiefs.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 55,000 state prisoners and more than 160,000 probationers.  It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
