New Warden Named at Emanuel Women's Facility

Sue Mickens Appointed
FORSYTH, Ga. — Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Brian Owens announced the appointment of Sue Mickens as the Warden of Emanuel Women’s Facility effective July 1, 2014. The facility is located in Swainsboro, Georgia. As Warden, Mickens will be responsible for overseeing 76 staff members and 286 medium security female inmates.
“Sue’s 21 years of dedicated service to the Department have made her an invaluable asset,” said Commissioner Brian Owens. “Her experience will continue to serve us well in her new leadership position as Warden."
Mickens began her career with the Department in 1993 as a Counselor at Washington State Prison. In 1995, she was promoted to Senior Counselor of Washington State Prison. Mickens was promoted in 2005 to Chief Counselor at Washington State Prison and in 2007 she was promoted to Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment. In 2013, Mickens transferred to Whitworth Women’s Facility to serve as Deputy Warden of Security, where she most recently served.
Mickens earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science from Lane College. During her career with the Department, she has completed Basic Management Training, Basic Correctional Officer Training, Pre-Command, Corrections Leadership Institute, and Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment Academy.
The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 55,000 state prisoners and more than 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
