Commissioner Names New Deputy Warden of Security at Smith State Prison

Kevin Sprayberry Promoted
Forsyth - Commissioner Brian Owens announced the promotion of Kevin Sprayberry as Deputy Warden of Security at Smith State Prison effective April 1, 2014. Sprayberry will be responsible for supervising and managing all security staff and the overall management and operation of the prison. Smith State Prison is located in Glennville, Ga., and currently houses 1,541 close security male inmates.
“Kevin has worked his way through the ranks since joining the Department in 1994,” said Commissioner Owens. “I am confident that his experience will be beneficial to the staff at Smith State Prison.”
A United States Air Force Veteran, Sprayberry was employed at Hays State Prison in 1994 as a Correctional Officer. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2000 and to Lieutenant in 2006 at Hays. In 2012, he was promoted to Chief of Security at Walker State Prison, and returned to Hays in 2013 as a Unit Manager.
Sprayberry attended David Lipscomb University in 1983, until he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1985. He is currently pursuing his Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice through California Coast University. He is a graduate of Basic Correctional Officer Training, Basic Management Training, Professional Management Program, Pre-Command and Effective Communication.
The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and more than 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
