New Warden Named at Hancock State Prison

Dennis Brown Reassigned
Forsyth - Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Brian Owens announced the reassignment of Dennis Brown as the Warden of Hancock State Prison effective July 1, 2013. The facility is located in Sparta, Georgia. As Warden, Brown will be responsible for overseeing 350 staff members and 1,267 close security male inmates.
"Dennis is a valuable asset to the Department," said Commissioner Brian Owens. "His leadership will greatly impact staff and inmates at Hancock State Prison."
Brown began his career with the Department in 1981 as a Correctional Officer at Scott State Prison. He served as Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain at Hancock State Prison from 1994 to 1999. He was promoted to Deputy Warden of Security in 1999 at Augusta State Medical Prison. He was promoted to Warden of Scott State Prison in 2007 and served in the same capacity at Hays State Prison in 2008. In 2010, he was transferred to Augusta State Medical Prison where he retired as Warden in May 2013.
Brown is a 1979 graduate of Fort Valley State College. He has attended Pre-Command, Professional Management Training, Supervisory Development and Correctional Leadership Institute. He is also a member of the Georgia Prison Wardens' Association.
The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and more than 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
