The Georgia Department of Corrections protects and serves the citizens of Georgia by providing an effective and efficient department through a highly dedicated and trained professional staff, who administer a balanced correctional system, which reduces future criminal behavior.

The department's mission is to protect the public, serve victims of crime and reduce crimes committed by sentenced offenders by holding offenders accountable and providing safe and secure facilities, effective community supervision and effective methods of self-improvement for offenders.

The department consists of 14,430 employees and is led by Commissioner James E. Donald. The major divisions are: Executive Office, Facilities Division, Probation Division, Human Resources Division, Administration Division, and the Georgia Correctional Industries.
